SENTENCING - Weapons offences - Careless use or storage of firearms - Flight from police
Appeal by Russell from ten-year global sentence following his convictions for firearms-related offences including reckless discharge of firearm, mischief endangering life, and flight from police officer. Russell sought a reduction of the sentence. The offences occurred when Russell fired multiple rounds with his rifle at the Vanderhoof Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment's windows and at unoccupied police vehicles parked at the detachment.

SENTENCING - Sexual assault - Particular sanctions - Imprisonment
Appeal by accused from his conviction for sexual assault and application by Crown for leave to appeal accused's sentence and if granted, appeal from accused's sentence. The accused was convicted of sexually assaulting two victims, MH and SM and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. The assaults began when the victims were teenagers and continued for several years.

More audit powers to CRA? Combatting ITC fraud without turning taxpayers into villains
The 2024 Federal Budget introduces important tax proposals that amend the Income Tax Act and strengthen the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) audit and compliance powers. The additional powers could be vital for enhancing tax collection and curbing GST/HST fraud, including Carousel fraud, which exploits cross-border trade to falsely claim Input Tax Credits (ITC), and Accommodation Invoice fraud, involving bogus invoices for fictitious transactions.
