Increasing regulations depressed economic and job growth, says StatCan study
In a new study on the potential impact of regulations on the economy, Statistics Canada has found that an increase in regulatory provisions from 2006 to 2021 was associated with a 1.7 percentage point reduction in gross domestic product growth and a 1.3 percentage point reduction in employment growth.

In some cases, participants can be injured as a result of deliberate contact by another participant. Alberta Superintendent of Insurance clarifies reinsurance of third-party risks by captive insurers
On Dec. 12, 2024, the Alberta Superintendent of Insurance (the Alberta Superintendent) issued Interpretation Bulletin 08-2024 (the bulletin). The bulletin outlines the Alberta Superintendent’s interpretation of ss. 27 and 28 of the Captive Insurance Companies Act (Alberta) (the Captive Act) in relation to captive insurers licensed in Alberta (Alberta Captives). It expands on the types of risks which may be reinsured by Alberta Captives to include “third-party” risks, provided certain conditions are met.

Ontario Court approves $3 million settlement in Fortress Real Developments class action
An Ontario Superior Court judge has approved a $3 million settlement in a class action involving investors who lost millions of dollars in a real estate project funded by now defunct Fortress Real Developments Inc. and its affiliated companies, Fortress Real Capital Inc. and FMP Mortgage Investments Inc.
