Canada launches new Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute
The federal government has announced the launch of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (CAISI) to “bolster Canada’s capacity to address AI safety risks” and continue to position the country “as a leader in the safe and responsible development and adoption of AI technologies.”

B.C. Court of Appeal upholds $1.5M damages order in defamation dispute involving competing firms
The British Columbia Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal in a case where a company was involved in a defamation campaign against a competitor and damages of $1.5 million were ordered. Counsel for the respondents Roger McConchie said it was “the most complex defamation case” he has ever handled.

Regulator finds two-thirds of issuer disclosures reviewed in 2024 required amendments, refiling
Two-thirds of reporting issuers whose disclosures were assessed under a continuous disclosure (CD) review program in 2024 were forced to either improve or amend disclosures, refile documents or were referred to enforcement, cease-traded or placed on the default list, according to a release.

Knowing that at least some (if not how many) lawyers and self-represented litigants are failing to disclose their use of ChatGPT or other generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools when they create content for documents filed in Federal Court, the national trial court has taken the novel step of posting YouTube videos, titled “Compliance with the Notice on the Use of Artificial Intelligence,” featuring judges who explain how to comply with the mandatory AI-use disclosure obligations the court imposed 10 months ago.
