Stryker Corp. and its subsidiary Howmedica Osteonics Corp. said Monday that the company has agreed to pay at least $1 billion to settle thousands of claims in litigation in New Jersey and Minnesota related to its allegedly defective metal hip replacement parts.

A judge kept a California man's hip implant defect claims against Stryker Corp. in multidistrict litigation in Minnesota federal court Thursday, even after finding he did not fraudulently sue two California-based hospital defendants to try to keep the case in state court.
