The Third Circuit agreed late Tuesday to temporarily bar the pending merger of Penn State Hershey Medical Center and PinnacleHealth System while the court hears an appeal of a decision rejecting arguments from federal regulators that the deal would stifle health care competition in central Pennsylvania.

FTC, Pa. Push 3rd Circ. To Keep Hospital Merger On Hold
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the state of Pennsylvania on Thursday urged the Third Circuit to halt two hospitals from merging after a district judge signed off on the plan, saying that he overlooked the reality that the tie-up would force insurers to pay higher rates to gain access to the hospitals.

3rd Circ. Urged To Let Pa. Hospital Merger Go Forward
Two Pennsylvania hospitals blasted a request by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the state to stay their merger during an appeal of a lower court decision clearing the plan, telling the Third Circuit on Wednesday the government will not be able to overcome the district judge's determination that the merger is in the public interest.

Pa. Hospital Merger OK Halted For 2-Week 3rd Circ. Appeal
The Federal Trade Commission and state of Pennsylvania will have two weeks to convince the Third Circuit that a proposed hospital merger will be anti-competitive, or else the merger can go through, a federal judge ruled Thursday in a compromise favored by the hospitals.
