More than 400 landowners have hit Chesapeake Energy Corp., Anadarko Energy and other oil and gas companies with lawsuits in Pennsylvania federal court alleging they conspired to monopolize mineral rights within the Marcellus Shale region, and to defraud landholders by taking bogus deductions from their royalty checks, in violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
