NYC Finance Dept. Grants Biz Tax Relief Amid COVID-19

New York City will allow for waivers of penalties for city business and excise taxes, by request, for those affected by COVID-19, the city Department of Finance announced in a guidance.

The New York City Department of Finance said in a finance memorandum released Thursday that the department will allow for a waiver of penalties for business and excise taxes it administers that are due between March 16 and April 25.

The request for the waiver can be made on a late-filed extension, on a return or in a separate request, the department said. Those who file extensions, returns or make tax payments won't be subject to late filing, late payment or underpayment penalties, the department said. It added interest must still be paid on all tax payments received from the original due date to the date of payment.

The relief from the city taxes is among several measures New York City officials are considering as part of a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
